Today’s poem last
appeared on the blog in 2010. Interestingly, it has proven poplar with gay and
straight readers alike; that is, those who enjoy my villanelles as it is only
fair to say that some readers don’t like this poetic form one bit.
More interesting
perhaps, even encouraging, is the fact that the poem takes its title from a
delightful French gay movie [about a young man whose parents are homophobic] Juste une question d’Amour about which many
straight as well as gay readers have been in touch to say they enjoyed very
much.
I've lost count of how many times I have lent the DVD to friends after recommending it; all my gay friends then bought it themselves to watch again and again.
A female friend bought a copy for the rest of her family to watch as they were having difficulty handling the fact that her brother had recently come out, encouraged by a lesbian aunt who had been persona non gratis for years. Apparently, it did the trick and all the family are now reconciled with both brother and aunt. Oh, but isn't that wonderful?
JUST A QUESTION OF LOVE
As spring rain from above
on Earth Mother in pain,
it’s just a question of love
As push comes to shove,
so love into its own,
as spring rain from above
The healing wing of a dove
will learn to fly again;
it’s just a question of love
Love has nothing to prove;
a bigot’s loss, its gain,
as spring rain from above
See a hand torn from glove
beat cold and pain;
it’s just a question of love
Let nature’s sexuality prove
as precious a bane
as spring rain from above;
it’s just a question of love
